A factory reset removes user data and settings. It does not generally replace a patched boot image, a custom kernel or the installed operating system. Decide whether you want a clean user profile or a complete return to stock before choosing a procedure.
Technical content reviewed against the linked project documentation on 28 September 2026. Follow the project’s current instructions for your exact device and software build.
Choose your goal
- Start fresh on the existing ROM: use that operating system’s documented factory-reset process.
- Remove Magisk: use the Magisk uninstallation guide. Deleting data is not the same operation.
- Sell the phone as stock: restore official firmware through the manufacturer’s instructions and verify it before relocking, if relocking is supported.
- Recover from a bootloop: identify the last change first. A wipe will not repair every incompatible kernel or firmware image.
Before resetting
Follow the external backup checklist. Confirm the account credentials that Factory Reset Protection may request after a reset. If transferring ownership, follow the manufacturer’s account-removal process before erasing; do not use a reset as a way around someone else’s account lock.
If Android starts normally
Use the reset instructions supplied by the installed ROM or manufacturer. Read exactly which storage and accounts the confirmation says will be erased. Menu names vary. Once it restarts, check the installed build and root state separately rather than assuming that the setup wizard means the phone is unmodified.
If you only have recovery access
Use the recovery version and wipe procedure documented for your exact device. A custom recovery is not required just because a phone is rooted. Do not install one merely to reset the phone, and do not format system, modem, EFS or other partitions speculatively. If the recovery instructions are unclear, preserve access and obtain the model-specific recovery procedure.
Before returning to everyday use
- Confirm calls, connectivity, camera and charging work.
- Install supported updates using the procedure appropriate to the current ROM and root method.
- Restore app data selectively and confirm account access.
- Remember that a reset does not clear Samsung’s Knox Warranty Bit or guarantee banking-app acceptance.
