GrapheneOS vs CalyxOS vs LineageOS vs Stock Android (2026): Which Should You Buy?
There is no universal best Android operating system. The right choice depends on your exact device, remaining update support, app requirements and whether you want to install optional Google services. This guide gives you a verification framework rather than an unsupported privacy ranking.
Last reviewed: 2 August 2026.
Start with the exact device
Before comparing names, verify that the exact model is supported by the project and still receives the security updates you expect. A model name alone is not enough: carrier variants and bootloader restrictions can affect whether an alternative operating system can be installed.
GrapheneOS publishes a current list of officially supported and recommended devices. It explains that full device security updates depend on continued updates from the original equipment manufacturer. Use the live project list rather than a copied static table.
Check current GrapheneOS device support.
Compare these five questions
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the exact model officially supported? | Support can vary by model, region, carrier and bootloader status. |
| How long do hardware and firmware updates remain? | An operating system cannot replace every missing vendor firmware or device-support update. |
| Can the bootloader be locked after installation? | The answer depends on both the operating system and the device. Check the project's current installation documentation. |
| Which apps and services do you require? | Banking, workplace, media and identity apps can apply their own integrity and certification rules. |
| Do you want Google Play available? | Projects use different approaches. Your app requirements should drive the decision. |
GrapheneOS
GrapheneOS is a privacy and security focused mobile operating system with substantial attack-surface reduction, exploit mitigations, privacy controls and app sandboxing. It supports a defined set of Pixel devices. Optional sandboxed Google Play runs as regular apps without special operating-system privileges and is installed only in the profile where you want it.
GrapheneOS itself recommends purchasing a supported device and installing the operating system yourself. Buyers of preinstalled devices should verify genuine GrapheneOS, factory reset from recovery before use and consider setting up attestation by following the project's current guidance.

CalyxOS and LineageOS
CalyxOS and LineageOS are separate projects with their own device lists, installation requirements, update policies and approaches to optional services. Those details change over time. Verify the exact device against the relevant project's current documentation and the exact configuration stated in our product listing before purchasing.
This page does not claim that one project is categorically more private, secure or compatible than another. A current, supported configuration that meets your app requirements is more useful than a broad ranking detached from the exact device.
Stock Android
Stock software varies by manufacturer and model. Check the vendor's update schedule, bundled services, privacy controls and app requirements for the exact device. Do not assume that every stock Android device has the same support period or configuration.
Banking and other integrity-sensitive apps
GrapheneOS's official guidance says banking apps are a particularly difficult compatibility category. Some work with any GrapheneOS configuration, many depend on Play services, and some enforce operating-system certification or anti-tampering checks. Sandboxed Google Play in the same profile is sufficient for many apps but is not a universal guarantee.
