Why "encrypted by default" isn't the whole story
End-to-end encryption (E2EE) means only you and the person you're messaging can read the content — not the server in the middle. WhatsApp and iMessage both do this well for message bodies. The problem is everything around the message.
Metadata is the record of the communication itself: your account identifier, your contacts, timestamps, group memberships, IP addresses and device details. Telegram

Its default "cloud" chats are only encrypted client-to-server using the proprietary MTProto 2.0 protocol — meaning Telegram's servers can read them. True end-to-end "Secret Chats" are opt-in, one-to-one only, and don't cover groups or your default conversations.
Since a September 2024 policy change, Telegram will disclose a user's phone number and IP address to authorities in response to valid legal requests — a far broader standard than it previously applied.

Signal
Signal is the privacy benchmark. Everything is end-to-end encrypted by default, and it actively minimises metadata — Signal's sealed sender hides who a message is from even from Signal's own servers.
