microG helps apps built for Google services run on Android Open Source Project systems, often called AOSP. It supplies open-source versions of common interfaces used for notifications, location, maps and account access. It is not a custom ROM, an app store or an exact copy of Google Play Services. Some apps work perfectly. Others lose features, detect the changed environment or refuse to run.

What is microG and what does it replace?

microG is an Apache-2.0-licensed compatibility framework for Android. Its main component, microG Services Core or GmsCore, reimplements parts of Google’s proprietary Google Play Services APIs. An API is a defined way for one piece of software to request a service from another.

Apps may use those APIs for push messages, location, maps, device registration or Google account sign-in. Without a compatible provider, an app may crash or silently lose those features. microG responds to supported requests without installing the complete Google Mobile Services package.
